Our Mission Statement
The mission of Alabama Equality is to advance full equality and civil rights for all the people of Alabama.
About Us
Alabama Equality is a statewide organization dedicated to educating the public and advocating for equal rights for LGBTQ people in Alabama, especially in response to harmful legislation targeting transgender individuals. We work to protect access to gender-affirming healthcare and fight against restrictive policies that force transgender people to use bathrooms based on their gender assigned at birth.
Our organization is guided by a diverse Board of Directors, including people of color, transgender individuals, and allies from every region of Alabama.
Our goals for the first year are:
-
Create educational materials about LGBTQ issues to share at community events.
-
Produce YouTube videos that explain the challenges facing the LGBTQ community.
-
Host Zoom meetings with elected officials to educate them about LGBTQ issues.
-
Launch an advocacy campaign to promote equality for all.
-
Develop a media plan using email, social media, and text messaging to engage supporters and take action.
-
Raise at least $20,000 through memberships, grants, and events.
-
Organize an event in June celebrating the 10th year anniversary of Marriage Equality.
-
Provide advocacy training to community members to empower them to be effective voices for equality.
Our leadership includes Patricia Todd, Alabama’s first openly gay elected official, and Shante Wolfe, a political strategist with a proven track record of leading successful campaigns and growing organizations.
