John Mann Bio for Alabama Equality
John Mann is a lifelong resident of Alabama born in Birmingham in 1990. Unfortunately, he shares a birthday with Ronald Reagan.
Growing up in the Warrior/Smokerise area John’s family moved to Cullman county when he was in the fourth grade and he would attend Good Hope schools until he graduated from Good Hope High School in 2008. He would go on to attend one semester at the University of Alabama before transferring to Troy University in the spring of 2009.
At Troy John studied print journalism under Steve Stewart, former president of the Alabama Press Association, and was the Features Editor for the Tropolitan, Troy’s student newspaper. He graduated in 2012 from Troy with a major in Print Journalism, returning to Warrior where he took over as secretary and office manager for his family’s plumbing company.
When the company relocated to Guntersville John moved with it, coming to Guntersville in 2023. Early on in Guntersville he met the editor of the Advertiser-Gleam newspaper and began freelancing sports stories for Marshall county schools. Eventually he began to cover a variety of stories in the county, freelancing for the Advertiser for two years. In 2025 during the Alabama state high school soccer tournament he helped cover the games for the Sand Mountain Reporter and would go on to take a staff post with them that summer.
At the Reporter John covers the Albertville and Guntersville areas as well as does proofreading, layouts and photos. Some of his favorite things to cover are The Whole Backstage Theater, local libraries and baseball/softball. John is also the secretary for the Marshall County Democratic Club, a member of the Marshall County Democratic Executive Committee and a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee. A liberal even as a teenager growing up in rural Cullman county he has voted Democrat in every presidential election since 2008 when he turned eighteen.
An avid reader, John’s favorite authors include Clive Barker, Fannie Flagg, Jaqueline Susann, SA Cosby, Gabino Iglesias, Anne Rice and Peter Benchley. You can find him on BlueSky under “SpiritFishin” where he posts mini reviews of all the books he reads.
More than anything John wants to work to bring more empathy into the community, which is the entire reason he wanted to become a journalist. You can reach him at jtmann404@gmail.com or 205-335-9016.
