John Mann

John Mann was born in Birmingham and grew up in Cullman county, graduating out of the Good Hope School system. After high school he attended Troy University where he studied journalism under former APA president Steve Stewart, graduating with a degree in Print Journalism in 2012. While at Troy he was the Features Editor for the school’s newspaper, The Tropolitan, for three of the four years he attended.
After graduation John worked in journalism briefly, returning to his hometown in Warrior to take over the management of his family’s plumbing company, leading him to move to Guntersville in 2023 when the company relocated. In Guntersville, John took up freelancing work reporting on local sports and community events, which he pursued for two years before taking a staff writing position with the Sand Mountain Reporter in 2025.
John is a big advocate for free speech and literacy, with libraries and reading accessibility being one of his biggest passions. He is always pushing for nonbiased journalism in local media, anddevotes much of his time to creating quality news stories that highlight the positive aspects of a Southern community.
In his personal life John is the secretary for the Marshall County Democratic Club as well as a member of it’s executive committee, a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee, member of the Guntersville Friends of the Library and Guntersville Historical Society. John’s three goals for life and work are literacy, empathy and fairness.
